Position: Reading Specialist

Position/Department: Merit Academy

Position Length: Full time, following 2026-2027 school year

Start Date: October 1, 2026

Salary Range: Per CESEA contract

Qualifications: Candidates must be eligible for/ hold a State of Connecticut teaching certificate required for the position. Candidates with previous teaching experience and a MS/MA in the discipline/ field are preferred.

Reports to: Administrator of assigned program or his/ her designee

General Purpose: Under the supervision of the administrator/ designee, the teacher performs all tasks required by the program/assignment.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

1. Demonstrates knowledge of student growth and development and different approaches to learning.

2. Demonstrates proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics, effective communication techniques and an understanding of the central concepts and skills of the discipline being taught.

3. Designs and delivers instruction using a variety of instructional methods and strategies to promote critical thinking and demonstration of skill development.

4. Plans instruction based on knowledge of subject matter, students, curriculum and community.

5. Creates a structure for learning and instructional opportunities to support student growth and development.

6. Evaluates learning and modifies instruction using a variety of assessment techniques.

7. Uses assessment techniques and data to develop strategies for best practices

8. Plans for differentiated groupings and instructional strategies to meet the needs of all learners

9. Informs himself/herself of any I.E.P requirements for students related to participation in their class and plans instruction accordingly and contributes progress information and suggested goals/objectives as needed for subsequent IEPs.

10. Is knowledgeable about Connecticut standards for teaching and learning (Connecticut Curriculum Frameworks, Common Core of Teaching, Common Core of Learning).

11. Conducts himself/ herself in accordance with the policies of the C.E.S. Board of Education and the State of Connecticut Code of Professional Responsibility for Teachers.

12. Engages in reflection and self-evaluation and seeks opportunities for professional growth.

13. Attends and participates in agency /staff meetings (e.g. school wide teams or task forces) and all announced in-service/ workshop activities as requested by the administrator or his/ her designee.

14. Demonstrates commitment to the profession and serves as a leader in the school community.

15. Complies with all federal, state and agency regulations on conduct and ethical behavior.

16. Performs other functions/ responsibilities related to the unique needs of the job/ program as assigned.

Specialized Functions: For physical education teachers only physical requirements includes standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, reaching, pulling, carrying, lifting and positioning. For special education assignments: occasionally may have to implement approved physical intervention strategies.
